Hopefully you have some exciting Cinco De Mayo (or Derby) day plans lined up this weekend. Whether you’re hosting a party or just doing dinner with friends, adding a little bug to your dish can really kick it up a notch. Here are some of our favorite bug additions:
1. Chipotle grasshopper as a topping:
These chipotle grasshoppers are crispy and have a refreshing tang. When we first tried them, we were surprised by the flavor; the taste was very distinct and had a little more kick compared to crickets, mealworms, and other insects we’ve tried. However, that zesty flavor and crunchy texture paired fantastically with our dishes as is or sautéed. (Get them here)
On top of our guacamole, we sprinkled the chipotle grasshoppers to add some crunchy texture and depth of flavor.
For our taco/tostadas, we topped them off with sautéed grasshoppers. Try sautéing the grasshoppers with some diced onions and seasoning (try adobo or taco seasoning) – the extra step of prep can really help elevate the dish. In our taco spread, we have: our favorite tortillas, chopped onion, cilantro, lime wedges, diced red peppers, jalepeno, diced tomatoes, sliced avocados and some habanero sauce.
2. Cricket Bean Dip
I love all sorts of chip dips and could not get my hands off of this bean dip after they came out of the oven. The earthy flavor of crickets blended seamlessly with the bean dip. Add the cricket to taste — we added 4 tbsp because we love the flavor!
Cricket Bean Dip
- 1 can refried beans
- 1 cup picante sauce
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 1 package (3 oz) cream cheese softened

- 1/4 tsp ground cumin to taste
- 2-4 tbsp cricket powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Mix ingredients in a bowl, then transfer to a baking dish
Bake for 20-30 min (until hot and bubbly)
Serve with your favorite chips and enjoy!
